Swim lessons can be an important part of developing a healthy lifestyle. Whether you’re 6 or 60, it is never too late to learn to swim. Swimming lessons at the Y are overseen by certified instructors who provide this training in a safe and fun way. Our swim lesson stage (class) descriptions are below. Use the links above to see session and fee information, a chart to help determine which class would be best for your child’s swim level or to register online for swim lessons.
STAGE DESCRIPTIONS:
SWIM STARTERS - PARENT & CHILD LESSONS, AGES 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS:
Level 1- Water Discovery: This class is for children ages 6 months to 3 years. In Water Discovery, we introduce infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. Accompanied by the parent or guardian, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.
Level 2 - Water Exploration: This class is for children ages 18 months to 3 years. In Water Exploration, we focus on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. Accompanied by the parent or guardian, toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention and the importance of supervision.
SWIM BASICS- PRESCHOOL LESSONS, AGES 3 – 5 YEARS
Level 1 - Water Acclimation & Movement: In Level 1, we will focus on increasing comfort with underwater exploration, encourage forward movement in the water and introduce basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance by a certified swim instructor.
Level 2 - Water Stamina: In Level 2, we will focus on forward movement in the water performed at longer distances than before and basic self-rescue skills performed independently.
Level 3 - Stroke Introduction: In Level 3, we will introduce stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforce water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke.
SWIM STROKES-AGES 6-10 YEARS (& OLDER AGES IN PRIVATE LESSONS) BASED ON ABILITY IN WATER
Level 4 - Stroke Development: In Level 4, we introduce breaststroke and butterfly and reinforce water safety through treading water and sidestroke.
Level 5 - Stroke Mechanics: In Level 5, we refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourage swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.
PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS
These private swim lessons are open to children and adults ages 3 and up with any level of swimming ability. Private lessons are scheduled through the Aquatic department. Classes are 30-minutes in length and provide one-on-one interaction focusing solely on swim instruction.
Packages of 4 swim lessons are $52 for members and $95 for non-members and Packages of 8 swim lessons are $92 for members and $155 for non-members.
PRIVATE BUDDY PACK
These lessons are for two people who would still like more focused instructor attention. Packages of 4 swim lessons are $27 per person for members and $50 per person for non-members. Packages of 8 swim lessons are $47 per person for members and $80 per person for non-members. Ages 3 and up.
SWIM LESSON POLICIES
- Classes must be paid in full at the time of registration.
- Classes where no one has registered will be canceled by 5 pm the day prior to the start date.
- 2 participants must register for a class to continue as scheduled. If only one participant registers for a class, we will provide 4 30-minute classes.
- Make-up days are provided ONLY if the YMCA cancels a class. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR CLASSES OR SESSIONS NOT ATTENDED. The YMCA has discretion as to credits due to extenuating circumstances.
- In case of thunder or lightening, the pool will close. If these conditions occur, please call your YMCA. If at all possible, we will try to contact you prior to your lesson.
- Depending on availability, registration for classes will end 48 hours before the session start date.
OPEN DOORS POLICY
The YMCA will not turn away anyone due to their inability to pay. Financial Assistance is available for all programs and membership. Open Doors applications are available on our website or at our Welcome Center.
